Though there are various ways to evaluate stakeholder requests, I've found that using this simple four-question framework effectively guides decisions on whether to address a research request right away, defer it to a later time, or dismiss it altogether and push back.
What if I proceed do this research?
This clarifies the potential impact: what decisions stakeholders aim to inform with the findings and how soon do they need them?
What if I don't do it?
This makes the consequences of not acting on the request explicit: will it lead to significant losses of time or money, or it can be managed based on existing knowledge?
When do you need the results?
This is for understanding the urgency of the request. It can guide you on whether you need to accept the request (if it's urgent and highly impactful), postpone the request (if you're too busy and the research can wait), or push back on it (if it's urgent but has little impact and you are too busy).
How does this project align with our goals (quarterly/yearly)?
This explores the project's relevance to the team's/company’s objectives. It helps you determine if the request supports the overall direction or if it distracts from more critical goals.
